Critically
and popularly acclaimed as one of the most uproariously funny
musicals in recent years, Urinetown is a hilarious
tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time
when water is worth its weight in gold. In a Gotham-like city,
a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year draught, has
led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens
must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent
company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's
most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides he's had
enough, and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom.
In
addition to the comedic take on the politically correct sustainability
issue, Urinetown pokes fun at the American musical
itself, borrowing with a great big wink from such standbys
as Les Miserables, West Side Story, Annie,
Bob Fosse's choreography, Stomp, How to Succeed
in Business., even the obligatory gospel song in the
second act of just about every blockbuster musical ever to
hit the American stage!
Urinetown
garnered the 2001 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding
Broadway Musical, three 2002 Tony Awards including Best Original
Score, and many more.
