a
musical drama
by Duncan Sheik
and Steven Sater
based
upon a play by Frank Wedekind
March 8-25, 2012
"...exhiliarating...bold,
funny and inviting."
- The New York Times
Created by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater, this rock
musical adaptation of Frank Wedekind's controversial 1891 German
play is about teenagers who are discovering the inner and outer
tumult of sexuality. Thrillingly set to a contemporary rock beat,
it addresses the difficult subjects of masturbation, abortion, homosexuality,
rape, child abuse and suicide.
The New York Times said, “in exploring the tortured
inner lives of a handful of adolescents in 19th-century Germany,
this brave new musical, haunting and electrifying by turns, restores
the mystery, the thrill and quite a bit of the terror to that shattering
transformation that stirs in all our souls sometime around the age
of 13, well before most of us have the intellectual apparatus in
place to analyze its impact. Spring Awakening makes sex
strange again.”
Spring Awakening is winner of the
following: Tony Award for Best Musical (2008), Drama Desk Award
for Outstanding Musical (2007), Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding
New Broadway Musical (2007), Laurence Olivier Award for Best New
Musical (2010), New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical
(2007), Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical (2007), among
others.
Please
note: Spring Awakening is a powerful coming of age story
