ABOUT THE SHOW
A truck stop sandwich shop offers its formerly incarcerated kitchen staff a shot at redemption. Even as the shop’s callous owner tries to keep them down, the staff members learn to reclaim their lives and find purpose through their shared quest to create the perfect sandwich.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
CLYDE
Female, Black, Late 30s–50s.
The tyrannical, "steel-hearted" owner of the truck stop. She is a formerly incarcerated woman who has no faith in redemption. She is a dominatrix of the kitchen—sexy, fierce, and eager to humiliate. Requires an actor who can "change the temperature of a room" with an entrance. Great comedic chops.
MONTRELLOUS
Male, Black, 40s–late 50s.
The "Sensei" or "John Coltrane" of sandwich making. Mindful, zen-like, and deeply kind. He served a long sentence and now uses cooking as a form of meditation and healing. A mindful, centered presence. He is the spiritual anchor of the kitchen.
LETITIA (TISH)
Female, Black or Afro-Latina, mid-late 20s.
A single mother to a daughter with health issues. She is quick-witted, sharp-tongued, and a survivor. Despite the toxic environment, she is a romantic at heart looking for a genuine connection. Needs excellent comedic timing and the ability to balance toughness with vulnerability.
RAFAEL
Male, Latinx, mid-late 20s.
A formerly incarcerated line cook and recovering addict. He is a hopeless romantic who wears his heart on his sleeve (especially for Letitia). Playful and charming, yet terrified of Clyde. High energy, goofy but suave, with great physical comedy/timing.
JASON
Male, White, mid-20s–early 30s. Working class.
He arrives with white supremacist tattoos on his face (remnants of prison survival). He starts as a perceived threat—surly and guarded—but undergoes a massive transformation into vulnerability. Requires an actor who can navigate a significant emotional arc.
Manoa Valley Theatre encourages performers of all races, ethnicities, gender identities, ages, sexual orientations, and ability statuses to attend our auditions. Certain roles may have specific requirements indicated by the playwright in order to tell the story.
