MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Welcome to Mānoa Valley Theatre. We are so glad you have chosen to join us for the third production in our 54th season. Who would have thought that the singer-songwriter who wrote and performed the billboard #1, “Escape (The Piña Colada Song),” would be encouraged to write a full-length musical for the New York Shakespeare Festival. Rupert Holmes was performing some of his “story songs” at a nightclub and following his performance, he received a note from Gail Merrifield (wife of Joseph Papp), the director of development for the New York Shakespeare Festival. Merrifield was so impressed with his “story songs” that she encouraged him to write a musical for the festival. The seminal experiences that influenced his creation of the musical were from Holmes’ childhood. At age three, he first experienced the theatre. It was a modern “panto” complete with the cross-dressing “best boy” lead character and audience sing-alongs. At age 11, his love for mystery books led him to Dickens unfinished novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood. The Mystery of Edwin Drood premiered at the New York Shakespeare Festival in August 1985 and moved to Broadway with a revised version, where it ran until May 1987. The Roundabout Theatre Company presented the revival production in 2012. That is the version we are presenting at this performance. The musical had 11 Tony Award nominations and won 5, including Best Musical. Holmes, the only Broadway composer to write the book, music, lyrics, and orchestrations for a musical, won Tony Awards for Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score. Thank you to all who are current supporters of MVT. You make these performances possible. If you enjoy tonight’s performance and wish to donate to the theatre, you may do so through our website, manoavalleytheatre.com or by calling 808-988-6131. Enjoy the show! Kip
