Class Description:

 

Acting is one of the most fun and fulfilling forms of performance. Actors who enjoy telling a story in an exciting way, to the point where the audience leans forward and cannot wait to find out what happens next, is one of the most thrilling theatrical experiences. In this class you will learn how to do just that. Learning how to use your body, voice, imagination, and uniqueness of self to have fun performing theatrical pieces in a clear, truthful and exciting way.

 

Acting is a craft that can be explored at every level. Whether you are curious about acting for the first time, have performance experience, or are even a seasoned professional, this class will be tailored to your experience level and give you the fundamentals while also building technique. No matter where you are in your development, in this class you will grow - empowering yourself to own your unique expression and have confidence as a performer.

Adult actors at any level of experience.

 

What will I leave this class with?

 

At Least one monologue performance ready, an understanding of how to break down and perform a scene, how to approach a role, and how to work spontaneously with your fellow actors.

AUDITION TECHNIQUE

One Day Workshops

Class Description:

 

Do you have an audition coming up? Or just want to learn how to audition? Whether it be for a play, on-camera, or for a college acting program - in this workshop you will learn tools and techniques that will make you feel prepared and confident when you walk into the audition room and do your best work. 

 

Who is this class for?

 

Beginners to experienced professionals - the workshop will be tailored specifically to your goals and you will be met at your skill level and grow from there.

Audition material performance ready, skills in how to prepare for an audition, and how to present your best work.

In this class you will learn how to act in a simple, truthful and spontaneous way specifically for the camera. Given that the camera tells a story in a series of pictures, you will also learn how to create the behavior of the scene working within the frame of the camera. Technical tools will be shared on how to break down a script, build the reality of a scene, and how to tell the story that is actually on the page. 

 

Whether you are just starting out, would like to build upon your current skills, or are prepping for professional auditions, this class is for you. With so many opportunities of projects currently shooting in Hawaii, as well as local artists creating original films and digital shorts, this is an opportune time to hone your on-camera skills.

Who is this class for?

 

Ages 9-15. This class is for young students looking to have fun learning how to use the basic tools for acting: Their body, voice, and imagination. In this class theater games, ensemble building exercises, and how to work with fellow classmates on a performance are explored.

 

What will I leave this class with?

 

Growing confidence in how to tell a story as an actor, having fun performing, and how to act with a group of fellow students.

Class Description:

 

Shakespeare can be one of the most thrilling forms of theater. As an actor, given the beautiful heightened language, it takes technical understanding of his work in order to perform it in a way that is clear and magnetic for an audience. With this focused coaching session you will learn vocal dynamics for Shakespeare’s text (written in verse and prose), how to communicate heightened language in an easeful and dynamic way, and how to inject your unique personality into the great stories of Shakespeare.

 

Who is this class for?

 

Ages 16 and up. Wherever you are at in your experience level - in this class you will grow. 

 

What will I leave this class with?

 

At least one Shakespeare monologue performance ready and a deeper understanding of how to approach and execute Shakespeare’s words in a clear, fun and engaging way.

These One-on-One coaching sessions can be whatever is your desired focus and can include one or a combination of:

 

1. Audition Preparation

Do you have an audition coming up? Or just want to learn how to audition? Whether it be for a play, musical, on-camera, or for a college acting program - in your coaching session you will learn tools and techniques that will make you feel prepared and confident when you walk into the audition room and do your best work. Preparation for a specific audition by working on the assigned material (scenes, songs, or monologues) can also be the focus of the session.

2. How to Approach a Role

Have an upcoming show you have been cast in and want to bring your all? Or just want to deepen your understanding of how to approach a character? In this focused session you will explore tools that will help you relate to your character personally, understand their journey in the play or musical, and how to execute the arc of the character in a truthful, clear and exciting way.

3. Voice & Speech

An audience can enjoy an actor who is very energetic on stage, but the audience must also be able to understand the actor's words. Thus vocal clarity is imperative in theatrical storytelling. If you are interested in gaining tools for voice and speech, in these sessions you will develop your vocal quality and range, articulation, and vocal dynamics with various forms of text that will help you effortlessly communicate clearly onstage.

4. Contemporary Plays: Scene Study

Want to explore new plays and how to approach them? The focus of this session will be on how to break down a scene from a script analysis perspective, and how to truthfully act the scenes from the characters point of view.

5. Shakespeare 

You will learn how to communicate heightened language in an easeful and dynamic way, and how to inject your unique personality into the great stories of Shakespeare.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 

INSTRUCTORS

Julia Ogilvie - ACTING

Julia Ogilvie is a teacher and actor originally from Hawaii and back here from New York. She has taught acting for Yale University, Rutgers University, University of Hawai’i and The Juilliard Drama Outreach Program at Snow College. She has also directed and taught for The American Conservatory Theater’s Graduate Acting Program. She enjoys teaching and coaching actors of all ages from around the country as well as internationally. 

 

Acting work includes: Timon of Athens (Off-Broadway at Theater For A New Audience & The Shakespeare Theater Co. in D.C), That Beautiful Laugh (Off-

Broadway at La MaMa); A Midsummer Night’s Dream (The Shakespeare Theater Co. in D.C. and The Macau Arts Festival in China). And she can be seen in the new show Doogie Kamealoha M.D. on Disney+ and in the CBS show Magnum P.I.

 

Julia is a Presidential Scholar in The Arts award recipient, and trained at The Maggie Flanigan Studio in New York, as well as The Juilliard School.
