Director's  Note:

Stephen Sondheim – the master lyricist and composer of some of musicals’ most demanding numbers, is considered one of the greatest figures in 20th century musical theatre. Acclaimed with writing everything from “un-singable” songs to the composer of complex innovative music and heart-breaking melodies, he was a relationship satirist, who is known as an icon of the theatre for over 40 years. Side by Side by Sondheim premiered May 4, 1976 at London’s Mermaid Theatre with a cast that included David Kernan, Millicent Martin and Julia McKenzie singing, Ned Sherrin as the narrator/director and co-musical directors Tim Higgs and Stuart Pedlar. Originally it was produced as a benefit for the Stables Theatre in Wavendon which was owned by Cleo Laine and her husband John Dankworth. The London production ran for a total of 806 performances, moving to two further locations from the May 4 opening until closing April 29, 1978 at the Garrick Theatre London. It was created essentially as a showcase of songs from Sondheim’s early works like Gypsy and West Side Story where he was the lyricist only, to the productions Anyone Can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music and Pacific Overtures, for which he was both composer and lyricist. The numbers for Side by Side by Sondheim were grouped together by common themes or by particular production, with the narrator adding relevant information regarding the connections. Sondheim was a consummate wordsmith and common themes in his scenarios often involve family, friends, foes and strangers gathering to celebrate or commiserate, characters on personal journeys and the conflicts and injustices in everyday life. He seemed, to me at least, to be always interested in personal relationships and the outcome of opposing opinions within them.

It’s those relationships that inspired me to want to set Side by Side by Sondheim in a “play-like” formula rather than present it as a review. The idea of realistic characters meeting at a friend’s home for pre-theatre cocktails, and the conversations that would come out of their dialogue, interested me more than singers sitting around a piano on stools telling the audience “What Sondheim did next…”! I want the audience to engage by listening in on these conversations about Sondheim as the excitable theatre goers delve into his world. Reality and fantasy blur and the audience questions if the characters are singing from their own life experiences or just belting out a number from their favorite Sondheim show as a party piece. Are we still in the hosts’ living room or are we transported to some old theatre of the past? My hope is that the audience is inexorably drawn into the soiree and feels as though they are guests at the party as well. In the end the performers head out to the theatre, (hopefully not late for curtain up), and the audience leaves the theatre side by side with Sondheim in their thoughts and hearts.
