About the play

The Chinese Lady premiered as a co-production by Barrington Stage Company and Ma-Yi Theater Company, and was hailed a New York Times Critics’ Pick during its NY run.

The co-world premiere of The Chinese Lady was presented at Barrington Stage Company in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, in July 2018, and was commissioned and co-world premiere presented by Ma-Yi Theater Company in New York City.  The play was developed with support of the Roe Green Award at Cleveland Play House.

This production by Mānoa Valley Theatre is the Hawaiʻi premiere of The Chinese Lady.

Aloha and welcome to Manoa Valley Theatre. We‘re so glad you’ve chosen to spend some time with us in our house. It’s hard to believe, but this is the seventh and last show of our 2022-2023 season. It feels like quite the accomplishment to have weathered the storm from when we were forced to close the doors in March 2020 to now. We’re so grateful for your support. Whether you’re a donor, season ticket holder, or single ticket holder, your faithfulness to MVT is why we’re still here. In the last month, there has been news about well-established theatres across the mainland that have had to close their doors or cut back significantly on staff and programming. We certainly have felt the pain of the squeeze that has come out of the pandemic, but not nearly to the extent that many other theatres have and that’s because of you. Mahalo nui loa. As we approach the start of a new artistic season, you can continue supporting MVT by becoming a full season ticket holder. Not only will you get to pick your seat for the whole season, but you’ll also save money too. And… you can change your performance dates any time you want with no fees or restrictions. I know you love us and I know you’re coming back, so why not save money and seal the deal for the season? We’re very excited to have the privilege to present Lloyd Suh’s wonderful, charming, funny, and poignant play The Chinese Lady. Suh’s masterful storytelling evokes themes and associations that reverberate far beyond the history itself, but with this singular tale, the deep and painful tensions that the United States has struggled with for centuries regarding race and culture are exposed. Our hope is that you will leave the theatre with a lot of questions and that thoughtful discussions will ensue. So glad you’re here, Kip
