MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Welcome to Mānoa Valley Theatre’s 5th show in our 54th season. We’re so glad you’ve chosen to join us for a very funny disaster. I assure you there will be laughs-a-plenty. As always, the actors on stage are the stars of the show, but this time they have some serious competition. When I first saw The Play That Goes Wrong in New York City, I was amazed at the technical expertise required to build and run the show. It has been nothing short of a brilliant effort by our designers, builders, and crew. The set, costumes, and props truly become an additional cast member in this clever farce. Upon hearing that MVT was going to produce The Play That Goes Wrong, more than one of my colleagues from other theaters shook their heads and responded with something to the effect of, “There is no way we would take on that challenge.” So, special kudos go to our amazing technical and artistic staff. Oxford defines farce as follows: a comic dramatic work using buffoonery and horseplay and typically including crude characterization and ludicrously improbable situations. The Play That Goes Wrong certainly fits that definition to a tee. An unconscious leading lady, a corpse that can’t lie still, a missing CD box set, and a word-mangling butler for starters. The ill-fated members of the Cornley University Society’s production of The Murder at Haversham Manor must battle against forgotten lines and falling scenery in hopes of arriving in one piece at the final curtain call. In this production, “Break a leg!” takes on a whole new meaning. I know you’ll enjoy the show and hopefully we’ll get it wrong! Enjoy the show! Kip
