MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
E komo mai and welcome to Manoa Valley Theatre’s fourth production in our 54th season. We’re so glad you’ve chosen to spend a little time with us in the theatre. The production you are about to see is the product of a young composer’s struggle to follow his dreams. In 1982, after graduation from Adelphi University, Johnathan Larson moved to NYC. He lived in a 5th floor apartment on the west side of Manhattan with no heat until his death in 1996. Tragically Larson died of an aortic dissection the day before his Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning musical, Rent, was to have its first preview performance. In 1984, Larson, after being denied the rights to create a musical version of Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, set out to write his own futuristic musical, Superbia. Although Superbia won the Richard Rodgers Production Award and Development Grant, it never saw a full production. The song “Come to Your Senses” from Superbia did make it into his next musical, tick, tick…BOOM! With tick, tick…BOOM! Larsen flipped the script and wrote a musical about how no one wanted to produce his musical. This musical, completed in 1991, was originally titled 30/90 then renamed Boho Days, and finally tick, tick…BOOM!. It was originally conceived as a “rock monologue” for Larson, a piano, and a rock band. After Larson’s death it was reworked by playwright David Auburn and arranger and musical director Stephen Oremus into a stage musical. Tick, tick…BOOM! was premiered off-Broadway in 2001. A film adaptation directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda and starring Andrew Garfield as Larsen (Academy Award nominated performance) was released on November 12, 2021.
